MUSSELBURGH CONSERVATION SOCIETY SEEKS

 NEW MEMBERS

Did you know that Musselburgh has a thriving Conservation Society, which is concerned with the history of our town, its buildings and landscape? Do you care about the environment you live in? Would you like to join us?

In this rapidly changing world it is hard to keep up with the pace of the changes taking place in our built environment. The Committee of the Musselburgh Conservation Society takes an active role in monitoring new planning applications – and trying to reflect the views of the Membership when making our comments.  In the past year we have been involved with the Public Enquiry concerning the all weather track proposals for Musselburgh Racecourse, (which has been successfully resolved). This year the planning issues will concern the re-siting of Tesco Supermarket, the new Health Centre, and residential development on the Mall Avenue.

The Society runs an interesting series of winter lectures.  Our first meeting is a talk on “Fisher Women” by Simon Fairnie on 11th October.  Our monthly meetings are held at 7.30 pm in St Peter’s Church Hall (attached to the church with the fine spire at the east end of the High Street).Further meetings will include talks on the restoration of Mavisbank House (8th November), archaeology developments in East Lothian (13th December), and the history of public transport in our area (10th January 2008). There will also be a summer trip next June.

Visitors are welcome at our meetings.  Come along and give us a try, or fill in the form below to become a member, or visit www.musselburghheritage.org.uk
